TikTok Buy Direct Runs on UCP: What Brands Need to Know
On 5 October, at Advertising Week New York, TikTok announced two shopping features for its feed: Buy Direct, a one-click checkout that buys straight from a brand without leaving the app, and Shopping Assistant, a conversational agent that answers product questions. TikTok's newsroom post doesn't mention UCP, but its business blog for advertisers does: Buy Direct "requires an integration with Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)".
That puts UCP behind a checkout inside TikTok's feed. This post covers what TikTok announced, how UCP fits in, what the partners have said, and what a brand needs to know before asking for access.
What TikTok announced
Buy Direct is, in TikTok's words, "a seamless in-app checkout solution that allows users to make purchases directly from a brand, without leaving TikTok". A shopper buys from the For You feed with one click, using a saved payment method and address, and tracks the order in the app. TikTok says the brand stays the merchant of record for the transaction.
Shopping Assistant is "a conversational AI agent that guides users through their shopping journey". It sits on the product page in a chat window and answers questions about "product details, shipping, sizing, availability and purchasing". In TikTok's business blog, a shopper can then continue to checkout on the merchant's site, inside TikTok's in-app browser.
TikTok calls these the start of its "Agentic Commerce shopping experiences", built with "Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza, Stripe, and more". The same announcement covered Agentic Leads (an AI lead-generation agent), the TikTok Ad Network opening to US advertisers, and TikTok's MCP server for ad workflows.
Is it live?
Not generally. TikTok's business blog says its agentic solutions "are available through eligibility-based testing opportunities", and that advertisers should contact their TikTok sales partner "to learn more about eligibility, available testing opportunities, and determine the right setup". Adweek reported the features as beginning to roll out to users and brands in the US. TikTok hasn't published a launch date, a market list or the eligibility criteria.
Salesforce's timeline is more specific. Its announcement gives a phased rollout beginning in Q1 2027 for the UCP-powered experiences on Commerce Cloud.
How UCP fits in
UCP is the open protocol that lets an AI agent or platform search a store's catalog, build a cart and complete a checkout through the store's own systems. In Buy Direct, TikTok is the platform and the brand is the business. TikTok runs the discovery and the buying screen in its feed; the brand's own commerce system takes the order, which is how the brand stays merchant of record.
TikTok's blog describes UCP as "a standardized set of rules that enables AI agents and merchant systems to work together". Salesforce's post is more concrete about the plumbing:
"UCP acts as an open-loop infrastructure layer. While the product discovery and engagement happen dynamically on TikTok, UCP allows your own Commerce Cloud infrastructure to process the transaction without redirecting the shopper to your retail site."
Salesforce says its "native Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) integration will allow Commerce Cloud customers to support a frictionless checkout through TikTok's Buy Direct ads while remaining the merchant of record", and says it works with Salesforce Payments and Order Management out of the box, as well as other payment providers.
Shopping Assistant answers the kind of open questions that UCP's ask capability, merged two days after the announcement, now standardises: sizing, shipping, returns. Neither TikTok nor its partners have said whether Shopping Assistant uses ask, and nothing in the announcement says it does.
TikTok in the spec repo
TikTok's engineers have been working on UCP in public for months. Contributors whose GitHub profiles list TikTok or ByteDance have filed proposals in the UCP spec repository that read like a feed-shopping wishlist:
- A seller logo on catalog variants (#674), so a platform can show whose product it is.
- Media on option values (#675), for colour swatches. We covered it as the next step after UCP's new media types.
- Discount previews in the catalog (#715, #707), so a deal can show before checkout.
- Platform-funded discounts (#727), where the platform pays for a discount and reimburses the business.
- Selected options carried through to cart and order (#750).
All of these are still open. Alongside them, TikTok-affiliated engineers have landed a run of fixes to the spec's docs, tooling and the schema validator. The Shopping Tech Council's 2 October minutes mention "contributions from TikTok" among the open pull requests in the schema repository that the council plans to work through.
The partners are in the room too. Shoplazza and Stripe both have members on UCP's Bulk Product Discovery working group, which is drafting catalog feeds: the bulk path a platform like TikTok would use to index products before a buyer asks.
What brands should know
- UCP is the entry ticket for Buy Direct. TikTok's own wording is that Buy Direct "requires an integration with Universal Commerce Protocol". A brand without a UCP checkout, its own or its platform's, isn't a candidate.
- Your platform matters more than your plan. The named partners are Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe. If your store runs on one of them, the integration is likely to arrive through that platform rather than through a project of your own. Salesforce has given Q1 2027; the others haven't published dates.
- You stay merchant of record. The order, the payment and the customer relationship sit with the brand, per both TikTok and Salesforce.
- Access is through TikTok sales. There's no self-serve sign-up. Eligibility runs through your TikTok sales partner.
- Product data quality shows up twice. Shopping Assistant answers questions about sizing, shipping and availability, and Buy Direct checks out against your live catalog. Gaps in either show up in front of the buyer.
Check what your store declares
Before talking to TikTok, check whether your store publishes a UCP profile at all, and what it declares. The UCP Checker reads any store's /.well-known/ucp and shows its capabilities, transports and payment handlers. The catalog validator checks the product records an agent would see.

About UCP Checker
UCP Checker is the independent validation and observability layer for the Universal Commerce Protocol. We crawl, validate and grade every public UCP manifest we can find, run the merchant directory, the UCP Score, live adoption stats, the vertical guides and the authority-bound vendor map, and track the spec as it evolves so you don't have to — measured from two vantages (what a business declares, and what actually happens when an agent transacts), the same way for everyone, without picking winners.
